The existing Jack Candelaria Community Center is located in the San Jose neighborhood in the City of Albuquerque which is known for its culture and boxing history. The addition to the existing Jack Candelaria Community Center expands the existing multi-purpose room that houses all of the boxing rings and training equipment. The project also includes the renovation of portions of the existing community center including the main entrance and lobby. The lobby includes a New Mexico boxing history timeline educating visitors of the rich history of the community and inspiring the users of the building. The addition provides a new elevation and updated identity as part of the front of the building. Large windows will not only allow natural daylight into the interior training spaces but will also provide views from both the interior and exterior. Visitors will be able to see inside the building and see the boxing rings and training areas as they approach the front of the building. The new boxing addition was also designed to allow for lighting and seating to be used during after-hour events and boxing matches held at the center. As part of the renovations of the existing boxing training area, it was important to keep as much of the history and maintain the original look while integrating the new addition and modern updates.
Existing spaces such as the multi-purpose room and gymnasium were also renovated and improved to provide a large space that can be used for various community events and functions. A computer lab was also added to the existing community space. Site improvements were also incorporated into the design and enhanced and designed to allow for a future connection to a park that is to be developed in the future.
