TOLIKAN CHAPTER MULTIPURPOSE CENTER

Client: The Navajo Nation

Location: Teec Nos Pos, AZ

Size: 10,000 SF

The Tolikan Chapter of the Navajo Nation sought a master plan for the community government center that would provide members with a number of vital services. The facility is one part of the master plan that will serve as the Chapter’s primary government center. Other aspects of the master plan include a Senior Center and a Head Start facility. After closely collaborating with the Chapter, we also included a Ceremonial Navajo Hogan and a Veterans Memorial.

We infused the modern aesthetic of the building design with Navajo cultural-themed elements such as an eastward-facing entry, hogan-shaped lobby and constellation-inspired ceiling design in the main meeting room. Wood and stone accents are featured throughout, as are specialized motifs reflecting rug patterns and the natural landscape that is unique to the Tolikan Chapter area.

In addition to sustainable xeriscaping, we also designed the facility so that its power is supplemented by photovoltaic panels. Chapter officials are currently pursuing construction funding.
